In public worship, a person might prophesy in tongues, and another person might interpret the speech for the assembly to hear God’s word. The interpretation of tongues is another charism. Consult the article Tongues.
The Charism of Interpretation of Tongues complements the Charism of Tongues. The Holy Spirit enables the person with this charism to interpret tongues into a language known to the assembly. It is an important gift because, as Paul says, there is no evangelization without understanding the discourse.
Like prophecy, an interpreted tongue builds the church (1 Corinthians 14:5). We need to pray for the gift of interpretation to keep the charism of tongues. “One who speaks in a tongue should pray for the power to interpret” (1 Corinthians 14:13).
