Catholic Tradition and Customs

_________________________________________________________________

Catholic tradition is a collection of practices or beliefs associated with dogmas based in divine revelation.

According to the Catholic Church, dogmas are biding truths revealed by God. They form the faith deposit derived from Sacred Scripture and Sacred Tradition. The Church exercises authority from Christ to define these truths, ensuring they full belief and acceptance.

Certain Christian traditions are practiced throughout the liturgical year, such as during Advent, Christmas, Lent and Pentecost.

Catholics pray on a regular basis and make it a huge priority. The sign of the cross is an important custom before and after every prayer.

The differences between Catholic tradition and customs:

  • Catholic Tradition is unchangeable and refers to the Apostles’ teachings and the community’s faith in Jesus Christ.
  • Customs are human practices that may not contradict the Word of God but are not part of Divine Revelation.
  • Catholic Tradition is essential for the Church’s identity and is not subject to change while Customs can be altered or abandoned without losing the core faith.
  • The distinction is crucial in understanding how the Church interprets its teachings and how it relates to the broader culture and society. These distinctions help clarify the role of tradition in the Catholic faith and its relationship with customs.
