The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches us “Through indulgences the faithful can obtain for themselves and also for the souls in Purgatory the remission of the temporal punishment, consequences of sin.”  (n. 1498)

According to the Manual of Indulgences, to gain a Plenary Indulgence (only once a day), for yourself or for other souls, a Catholic must meet the requisites of a Plenary Indulgence except a confession suffices for several indulgences.
