Thousands of people flocked Fatima on August 13, 1917, driven by presumed visions and miracles. The provincial administrator Artur Santos (no relation to Lucia) intercepted and jailed the children before reaching Cova da Iria, because Fatima events were politically disruptive. He interrogated and threatened the children to divulge the Blessed Mother’s secrets.  Lucia complied excepting the secrets but volunteered to ask permission to Our Lady to reveal them. She appeared to the children nearby Valinhos on August 15.

They showed Fortitude because they would rather die than reveal the secrets.
