If you have a phobia about riding in elevators, you will avoid them, say to yourself, “I must avoid them to prevent tragedies,” and increase your phobia. If you risk several times riding in elevators, you will see no tragedy happened, and you will overcome your phobia. You can control your unhealthy anxiety before it controls you.

Cost benefit analysis is also valuable to overcome anxiety about addictions, such as cigarettes. Make a list of smoking disadvantages, including possible emphysema and lung cancer. Focus on the list a few minutes every day. You will likely conclude the disadvantages are not worth the benefits. You will reduce your unhealthy anxiety of quitting smoking.

Cost benefit analysis may interrupt your tendency to sabotage yourself considering only the addictive pleasure.
